University of Pittsburgh

Web: Our Approach

Communications Services has been building Web sites for the University's academic and administrative units since 1995. Our Web team members will bring to your project a collective 90-plus years of experience as Web specialists in higher education (mainly at Pitt) and the private sector—plus dozens of additional years of experience at Pitt as researchers, teachers, and managers. Our team offers a wide range of expertise in information architecture, design, development, writing, and more.

Each Web project follows a process developed through experience and in accordance with industry best practices. This process can be accelerated or expanded to meet your project's requirements and constraints. Learn more about the process.

Communications Services sites adhere to Pitt guidelines on the proper use of the University's seal, logo, colors, and other graphic marks. We also make sure your site's content conforms to University of Pittsburgh Writing Style.

Our sites are built to be ADA compliant, ensuring that content loads correctly for screen readers such as JAWS. We use the W3C-reccommended WAVE accessibility and validate our code to be compliant with World Wide Web Consortium standards. We also verify that your site loads correctly on all modern browsers.

Communications Services hosts all sites with Pitt Computing Services and Systems Development's (CSSD) Enterprise Web Infrastructure (EWI). Our team coordinates site configuraton and content migration for every site it produces. Hosting with EWI ensures security compliance and enables the CSSD network operations center to monitor sites for potential problems. We also helps you coordinate site access permissions. Learn more about EWI.

Regardless of the project size or budget, Communications Services provides expert recommendations on how best to organize your content and help users quickly find the information they're looking for.

Our sites are search engine friendly. Our code allows content to be easily indexed by search engines. We submit XML sitemaps to top search engines and help you place proper meta tags in your pages so you can maximize search page rankings.

Communications Services' content management system (CMS) is tailored to meet each site's content requirements and each department's management needs. Based on open-source software, and in current production for more then 20 Pitt sites, our CMS will allow you to manage site content more easily then ever before. Learn more about our CMS.

To help present a consistent message to your audiences, the Web team can collaborate with other Communications Services personnel on integrated marketing projects, making sure that design and editorial elements carry over from your Web site to your print publications and other marketing vehicles.

In Communications Services, you will find a partner highly invested in the success of your project, and ready to provide ongoing support after your Web site launches.
