Homepage

The homepage is mandatory content that contains several sections to add information about your website.

  • Featured Image: The image slider at the top of the page.  Each image in the slider is it's own page, and more can be created by the content type Feature Image.
  • Text Blocks: Sections of text that can be used for short descriptions highlighting content on the website.  By default there are two, one which includes a grey background and image.
  • Grid: Section where images with links to sections on the website can be added.
  • News Widget: Section at the bottom of the page that populates the most recently published News content.
  • Events Widget: Section that pulls events from the University Calendar.

You can edit the content on the home page, but adding or changing widgets is not permitted. For any widget modifications, such as update or removal of the news or events section, please put in a revision request.

The sections in the accordion below explain in more detail how to set up and edit each of these features.

The image carousel at the top of the homepage is a content type called a Feature Image. Each image is it's own page, that can be edited individually.

To add  a new Featured image, hover over Content > Hover over Add content > Click on Feature image

Add in a title for the feature image page. Note that this title will not display on the website.

Note: On some older websites, the title instead works as the Feature Title option as seen below.  View an existing example of a feature image to check if this is the case if you are unsure.

Under Feature Type, select Default (Image with Brief Caption)

Add in content to the Feature Title and Feature Caption fields. Note that space for the Feature Caption is limited, which means the caption will have to be kept short.

Choose an image from your computer using the Choose File button or get an image that’s already been uploaded to the File Browser. The image must be larger than 1170x405 pixels and less than 1MB. The allowed file types are png, gif, jpg and jpeg.

Add Alternative text for the image. Crop the photo as needed.

Feature images should not be used for logos or wordmarks. They are intended to showcase something relevant to your department or center.

To rearrange where the feature image shows up in the carousel, change the Sort Order.

Click Save.

Edit the feature image by clicking the edit button that’s displayed in the feature caption box.

Remove the feature image by going on its editing screen and unchecking the Published box at the bottom of the page.

The homepage contains two text blocks where information can be added.

Click the Layout tab on the top left of the screen > Navigate to the homepage item that you want to change > Click on the pencil icon > Click Configure

After making the edits, click Update. Then also, scroll to the top of the page and click Save Layout.

You also have the option to navigate to the homepage item that you want to change > Click on the pencil icon in the upper right hand corner> Click Edit.  This will take you to an Edit Block Content page where you can edit the information in the block. Once you have added your content, click Save.

The homepage includes a grid with six sections.  This grid can be used to highlight and link to sections of your website.

Click on the pencil icon in the upper right hand corner> Click Edit.

The title can be updated by editing the Block Description section at the top.

A section of the grid can be renamed by the Grid Item Title.  An internal or external link can be added in Grid Item Link.

An image can be updated by clicking the Remove button in the Grid Image section.  You can select Open File Browser or Browse to select a new image.  Then crop the image.

Please maintain options in the grid in three or six for the best display of the grid.

At the bottom of the homepage are the News and Events widgets.

The News widget pulls from the most recently published News Pages.  Content in this section needs to be managed by adjusting the news pages that are on display in this section.

The Events widget pulls from the University Calendar.  This widget can be changed to pull from a specific unit or group, but you must put in a request to do so.  To learn more about the University Calendar, see our section on publishing events.

To remove news & events blocks, or to filter the events shown on the homepage to reflect one or more specific unit, request a site revision through our form.

Older websites may have differences in how the homepage can be edited.  Homepage features may be directly edited on the homepage or need to be accessed in the Content menu.

Homepage Slider

  • This content type is used to create a slider for the homepage featuring three or more images and a short description for each.
  • To access this content type, hover over Content > View All Content and select Slider from the Type drop-down. Click Apply. The slider will appear in the listing. Click edit on the far right.
  • Enter the Title of the slider. (This is hidden from users, but a required field)
  • Add an Image, Header, and Body for each Slider Item.
*Add text describing the image into the Alternate Text field for when the image cannot be loaded.
  • In the Link field, add the path of the page you are linking to. This will be the same link you are using in-line in the Body field.
  • If you need additional slider items, choose Add Another Item. You can also delete sections by choosing Remove.
  • Add as many slider items as you would like to display on your homepage. Keep in mind that adding too many is not ideal, as users likely will not stay on your homepage long enough to see them.
  • Save the page when complete.
